The Barre Code has opened its first location here in Cincinnati and I was so pumped to be able to make my way down to check it out. Let me tell you something, this is not your average Barre class (no offense to others). If you live or work downtown, you don’t want to miss this! First, let me tell you how I discovered the Barre Code.
Michelle and I met in 2010ish when we worked together at dunnhumby. Michelle is hard working and fun loving, she’s determined and focused and let me tell you, she’s not afraid of much. When Michelle was living in Chicago she happened to get a Groupon for The Barre Code close to the dunnhumby office and reluctantly gave it a try. She was hooked. It was fairly serendipitous timing. Michelle’s father was battling cancer and Michelle needed extra strength. Not only did she find her strength but she found a community. She was so touched by her experience and such a believer in “Living the code” (more on that later) that she decided to open her own franchise when she and her husband moved back to Cincinnati. Did I mention she also just had a baby?? Details!
So let’s get to it. The Barre Code has an awesome location! It’s right in the middle of the downtown hustle, located at 615 Main St (on Main, between 6th and 7th). It has plenty of street parking. Most people won’t need it but I wasn’t working downtown that day, so I did. Look, I found the most perfect spot for my Monster Mom Truck.
I took a class called The Barre Code which focuses on Strength. It’s essentially full-body workout that consists of isometric holds and heavy repetition, working muscles to fatigue to develop muscle stamina and endurance. Different props and routines are used in each class to challenge the body and engage the mind. When they say muscle fatigue they weren’t kidding. I love a good muscle shake. I went into that class excited to support my friend but slightly nervous that it would be a ‘tuck tuck tuck’ barre class where I stand at the barre and don’t feel comfortable in my own skin. It was quite the opposite. We used weights and other props primarily on the mat. The barre was left for some leg burnout work and some awesome stretching at the end. I left that class feeling empowered and energized. I was great at some things and shook through some. I felt both stretch and strength which is my favorite combination. The women were of all ages, shapes and sizes. At the end, they all changed like Superman as they clipped on their work badges and hustled back to work, everyone saying literally out loud how much better they felt. Me too, ladies!!
Want to know my favorite part? The conversation in the class was not about the usual “You can do this. You’re 10 reps away from that bikini body you’ve always wanted.” It was about empowerment and encouragement to take this time for you to feel like your best self, inside and out. That’s what I’m talking about!
After class, I got to hang with Michelle and chat about life and business. We talked mom talk, theater, freelance and the Barre Code. When I asked what makes The Barre Code different than regular Barre Classes she said that it’s primarily the inclusion of both cardio and strength...hello, my two fav things, but also this concept of “living by the code”.

Back To Center: This 75-minute class will challenge you with a full-length Barre Code class followed by 30 minutes of restorative stretching and relaxation. This class will only be offered once during the challenge, either Saturday, September 30 or Sunday, October 1 (TBD).
Back To Fierce: Get ready to punch, kick, and find your fierce in these 50-minute classes throughout the challenge. Built on the principles of High-Intensity Interval Training, this class utilizes Brawl-inspired moves during three rounds of cardio intervals with active, strength-based recovery sections interspersed throughout. This class will be offered once per week during the challenge. Monday AM, PM and/or Thursday PM (TBD).
Back To Strong Barre Code: Embrace the shake with burnout challenges in every Barre Code class every Monday, Wednesday & Friday during the challenge, encouraging you to see and feel even stronger in your Chairs, Planks, and Push-Ups after three weeks.
They’ve done a similar challenge once before in July and look at this crazy awesome participation!
So if you live in the downtown area or work downtown (I’m looking at you 5/3, First Financial, P&G, Deloitte, and all your lunch buddies) you better get your booty over to The Barre Code. I felt amazing after this class and so should you.
